THOMASVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — For the children and staff at Brittain Academy, the loss of  11-year-old Nicole Kasera has been the one of the hardest thing they’ve had to experience.

“I cried last night for a straight whole hour, and she was the bestest friend I ever had,” Hannah Summey said.

On Sunday, Nicole “Nicki” Kasera was found dead in the back seat of her mother’s car in LaGrange, Ga.  Her mother, Nancy Kasera, has been charged with felony first-degree child cruelty in the death.

An autopsy conducted Monday concluded Nicki had multiple head wounds, which contributed to her death. The autopsy also confirmed the child had been dead 12 to 24 hours before Kasera called 911 and the child’s injuries showed “long-term, on-going severe physical abuse,” according to the sheriff’s news release.

Linde Brittain, founder of Brittain Academy, said she had known Nicki and her 8-year-old sister all their lives, and considered Nancy Kasera one of her best friends.

Briitain said Kasera had called her Sunday night and said Nicki had choked and fell in the back seat of the car and wasn’t breathing.  When Brittain called the sheriff’s office in Troupe County, Ga., she heard a very different story.

“The more information that came around, the more I was just shocked.  I’ve known Nancy for 10 years and I never would have known her to abuse either one of those girls,” Brittain said.

On Thursday afternoon, as Kasera went before a judge, Nicki’s friends were busy writing cards and preparing for an impromptu memorial service.

“We really miss you Nicki, and I’m really sad everything had to happen the way it did,” said Nicki’s teacher, Crystal Flores, as she shed tears for the young girl.
