Prairieview A&M students walk 7.2 miles to cast their vote

About 1,000 students from Prairieview A&M, a historically black university also known as an HBCU, got together, angered and annoyed by lack of support by local officials to properly accomodate their right to vote, organized themselves and on the first day of early voting, February 19th, marched to the courthouse to make their grievance and to cast a ballot.

The students have been involved in a long tussle with Waller County where the school is located. Waller county is actually a part of metro Houston.

In 2004, they filed a lawsuit when the number of early voting days was reduced at their school. Prior to that they were ineligible to vote in Waller county because they were not considered regular residents of the county. A protest was lodged with the Justice department and this technicality was removed.

No durational residency must be established in Texas to vote. All you have to do is register to vote 30 days prior to the day of voting.
